Music Theory


Theoryis very important when studying music. Whether you are learning an instrument or learning to compose or use technology, theory has a role because it is important to understand the concepts in order to progress. Anyone subscribing to our services is advised to particiapte in music theory at an appropriate level and theory teaching is offered in two ways; either as part of a student's one to one instrumental lesson (individuals only) or in group workshops (offered one evening per week for 2 hours).

Music theory covers the following areas of music:

  • pitch & notation
  • intervals
  • rhythm, time and duration
  • keys and transposition
  • instrumentation
  • texture
  • dynamics
  • orchestration
  • listening skills
  • articulation
  • ornamentation
  • harmony and counterpoint
  • history of music
  • structure and composition
Theory will be taught in accordance with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of MusicSyllabus and exams may be taken at the candidate's request.
